Egypt is one of Africa's largest potato producers and exporters, with the Spunta variety occupying the dominant position in its export programme. Originally a Dutch variety bred by ZPC, Spunta adapts exceptionally well to the sandy loam soils and dry climate of the Nile Delta, producing a long oval tuber with smooth pale yellow skin and light yellow flesh that is ideal for both retail presentation and industrial processing. Egyptian Spunta is planted in two cycles — winter (planted September, harvested February–April) and autumn (planted June, harvested October–December) — providing a combined supply window from October through April. Key commercial parameters are dry matter (18–21%) and specific gravity (1.080–1.095), which determine processing suitability and retail texture. Egyptian Spunta is particularly well established in markets across the Arab Gulf, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, where its consistent size, low bruising, and predictable Brix-to-dry-matter ratio make it a reliable stock for wholesale and supermarket chains.
